Manning cleared to resume career

Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Peyton Manning has been cleared by doctors to resume his NFL career.

This news comes as a surprise as just days ago reports were floating around that Manning had likely played in his last NFL game.

Doctors want Manning to continue with an aggressive rehabilitation program so that he continues to strengthen his neck and shoulder.

Whether Manning’s shoulder ever strengthens enough to the point where he can regain his old velocity throwing the ball remains to be seen.

All of this complicates the team’s decision to keep Manning at a very high price or save money but risk angering fans by cutting him.

Colts fire Caldwell

The Indianapolis Colts have fired head coach Jim Caldwell after leading the team to a 2-14 record.

Caldwell was 26-24 with the Colts in three seasons, leading them to the Super Bowl in his first year only to lose to the New Orleans Saints.

The head coach was surprisingly retained at the end of the season, but his fate was sealed when the team fired its general manager.

The new general manager will want to make his stamp on the franchise and hire his own head coach.

You can hardly blame Caldwell for the team’s struggles this year with all of the injuries and the loss of quarterback Peyton Manning.

Polians fired by Indianapolis

In somewhat of a surprising move, the Polians have been fired by the Indianapolis Colts after their 2-14 season.

The Polians helped build the Colts into one of the league’s top franchises and were known as some of the most shrewd talent evaluators in the business.

Bill and Chris Polian were hired just days after the Colts earned the No. 1 pick in 1998 and selected Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning.

Now they are on their way out the door just days after once again earning the No. 1 pick because Manning missed the entire season with an injury.

While it may have been time for a change as Jim Irsay alluded to, you have to wonder if this decision may end up backfiring on the Colts.

Manning done for the season

Not that it comes as a surprise, but the Indianapolis Colts have made it official: Peyton Manning will not return this season.

Manning’s recovery from neck surgery has been very slow, but there have been some positive signs over the past few weeks.

The Colts held out a slim chance he may be able to step back out on the field this year, but just throwing the ball before the end of the season would be a big accomplishment.

Rumors continue to swirl about Manning’s future with the team if the Colts draft quarterback Andrew Luck in the NFL Draft.

It would be great to have Manning mentor Luck for a year or two before he takes over, but that would tie up a lot of money at the quarterback position.

Colts sign Collins

The Indianapolis Colts have signed veteran quarterback Kerry Collins as insurance for star Peyton Manning.

Collins announced his retirement from the NFL just a couple of months ago despite having the inside track to the starting job in Tennessee.

The Colts are nervous that Manning won’t be ready for the season opener after undergoing offseason neck surgery.

The team would have started Curtis Painter at quarterback if Manning was unable to play.

Collins was probably enticed by the possibility of backing up Manning on a team capable of winning the Super Bowl.

Colts slap Manning with franchise tag

The Indianapolis Colts have decided to slap the franchise tag on star quarterback Peyton Manning.

The move assures the Colts of one more year of Manning’s services and more time to get a contract done.

The Colts have every intention of signing Manning to a long-term deal, but the sides haven’t come to an agreement yet.

There’s literally no way Manning gets away from the Colts, but it’s a bit surprising that it’s been this hard to bang out a contract.

Manning is likely seeking a deal greater than the one Tom Brady just received, which would make him he NFL’s highest paid quarterback.

Collie out for season

The Indianapolis Colts have placed wide receiver Austin Collie on injured reserve, ending his season.

Collie suffered his third concussion of the season in the team’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After catching two touchdown passes to start the game, Collie was layed out on a deep route down the middle of the field.

Quarterback Peyton Manning said the loss of Collie is a big blow for their playoff and Super Bowl hopes.

At this point, you have to wonder if the guy is going to ever be able to return to the football field.

Colts get past Titans, 30-28

The Indianapolis Colts sprinted out to a huge lead and then held on for a 30-28 win over the Tennessee Titans.

The Colts put up three early touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead and were able to hold on from there.

Quarterback Peyton Manning got back into the groove, throwing for 319 yards and two touchdowns.

Wide receiver Pierre Garcon finished with nearly 100 yards receiving and caught both touchdown passes.

The Colts now head into a pivotal showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars that will likely determine the winner of the AFC South.

Colts can’t sneak by Patriots, 31-28

The Indianapolis Colts mounted a late rally but still came up short in a 31-28 loss to the New England Patriots.

The game went back and forth between the two teams, though the Colts trailed the entire way.

Peyton Manning did rally the Colts back from a 10-point deficit late in the fourth quarter, but a turnover proved costly.

Manning already had his team in position for the game-tying field goal when he overthrew a receiver.

The pass was intercepted by the Patriots, and the loss pushed the Colts into a first place tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Colts can’t get past Eagles, 26-24

The Indianapolis Colts saw their furious fourth-quarter rally fall short in a 26-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Quarterback Peyton Manning threw for nearly 294 yards and touchdown but also had two interceptions.

He was pressured and hurried throughout the game as the Eagles blitzed through the Colts’ offensive line.

Manning also lost the services of wideout Austin Collie on a nasty hit that left him motionless on the field.

Collie was taken off on a stretcher, but thankfully was diagnosed with just a concussion and should be fine.
